Euan Mitchell: A thirty year career in Whisky

DSC 7203

Careers in Scotch whisky are rarely defined by quick wins or short chapters. They unfold over time, shaped by experience, instinct, and a steady commitment to craft. Over the past thirty years, Euan Mitchell’s path through the industry has been exactly that, a story of progression built on knowledge, leadership, and a clear sense of purpose.

Euan began his career in Campbeltown in 1996, first with William Cadenhead Ltd before moving to Springbank Distillers Ltd to manage UK and export sales. It was there, in one of Scotland’s most traditional whisky communities, that he developed a deep understanding of the fundamentals, not just of production and maturation, but of the patience and perspective the industry demands. Those early years laid the groundwork for everything that followed, instilling an appreciation for long-term thinking and attention to detail.

In September 2003, Euan joined Isle of Arran Distillers, at a time when the company was still establishing its identity. It was a young distillery with ambition, and for Euan, an opportunity to help shape something from the ground up. Drawing on his earlier experience, he quickly became the cornerstone of the team, shaping the development of both the whisky and the brand.

His appointment as Managing Director in 2008 marked a significant step in his career. In this role, Euan took on the responsibility of guiding the company through a period of meaningful growth, balancing day-to-day operations with long-term strategy. Under his leadership, Arran developed a strong and consistent range of whiskies, while steadily building its presence in markets around the world.

A defining milestone came in 2019 with the opening of Lagg Distillery. For Euan, this was more than an expansion, it reflected years of planning and belief in the company’s future. The introduction of a peated style alongside Arran’s established character demonstrated both confidence and a willingness to evolve, while championing the island’s credentials as a true ‘whisky island.’

Throughout his career, Euan has been known for a measured and thoughtful approach. Rather than chasing short-term trends, he has consistently focused on creating whiskies that people want to drink and return to. A whisky drinker’s dram. This philosophy, centred on quality, balance, and accessibility, has been a defining feature of his leadership. Alongside a very healthy dose of fun and humour which all his colleagues and friends in the industry would tell you is what they know him best for.

Looking back over three decades, Euan has remained closely connected to both the practical and strategic sides of the business and that experience continues to shape his perspective. His career reflects not only what it takes to build and lead within Scotch whisky, but also the value of patience, consistency, and a long-term view.

At its heart, Euan Mitchell’s story is about commitment, to the craft, to the people he has worked with, and to building something that endures.
